Shelter Theater Hosts Staging of Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman

By David Johanssen

Although acclaimed Argentinean novelist/playwright Manuel Puig wrote Kiss of the Spider Woman forty years ago, the multilayered, intensely compelling tale of love, betrayal, and intrigue remains timeless. Now Shelter Theater is proud to host this important story of transgender injustice, as Caja Negra presents the original stage play from Feb 22 to March 4. Advance tickets are available at the Biblioteca and online at Full houses are expected.

The story itself is simple while subtly complex. Prisoners Luis Molina and Valentín Arregui share a cell in a Buenos Aires prison. Molina, a transgender woman, is in jail for ‘corruption of a minor, while Valentín is a political prisoner. The two characters form an intimate bond in their cell, and their relationship changes both of them in profound ways. Each has always been alone, and always—especially now—in danger of betrayal. But in cell 7, each surrenders to the other something that they have never before.

When director Alan Jordan was asked about his motivations for bringing this piece to San Miguel now, he responded, “The original play, I feel, is quite a wonderful piece of literature and deserves to be seen as it was originally intended… two disparate souls in a prison cell with nothing but imagination and each other. The play is moving, funny, and a harrowing tale of intrigue, betrayal, and, above all, love. It is a great challenge for me as director, but the two exceptionally talented Latin actors we have driving the work are sure to make this production something very, very special in our community.”
