One Last Event Coming for Food in Film Festival

By Kristopher Kegel

On February 24, the day starts with the documentary film Deli Man. Ziggy Gauber co-owns a large deli in Houston and is also the grandson of the original owner of the Rialto Deli, which was the first kosher deli to open on Broadway in 1920s New York.

Deli Man is a heartfelt and heartwarming look at the history of the Jewish delicatessens in the United States. Throughout the film, various deli owners express their love for the culture and the food. This film is sponsored by INTIMO. Chef Zajar Torres will be serving up something delicious—“deli style.”

La Chopería Sports Bar will be offering a glass of dark chope, an excellent combination with deli food. La Chopería is located on Canal 21, only a few steps from the Jardin. This is the place to watch a sporting event. You can also enjoy an evening of karaoke or live music. La Chopería is sponsoring two of the films during the festival.

At 3pm, Vicki Challancin is presenting a lecture, “Chillies of Mexico.” Get to know your peppers in this interesting and fun presentation on the history, lore, and love of chillies.

The Cult Film La Grande Bouffe, at 5pm, will conclude the festival. La Grande Bouffe is a 1973 French-Italian film with Marcello Mastroianni. A hilarious, stomach-turning, morbid yet breezy, funny, and sad fable about four men who gather in a villa in the French countryside with the purpose of eating themselves to death in a gastronomic orgy. They gorge themselves on gourmet delights, pausing only to sample the charm of three negligible whores before expiring.

After this dark comedy, Chef Paco from El Petit Four will seduce the ticket holder with something very special, while Berlin offers a glass of bubbly.

The 2018 Food in Film festival is grateful to our premier food, wine, and gift sponsors as well as those whom have attended the films and lectures. Your generosity has made this event possible and has supported So Others May Eat, which feeds San Miguel’s elderly in need. We hope all attending 2018 Food in Film festival will return next year for more foodie films and tasty botanas.
