One Hundred Local Children Now Have Library Memberships

By Jan Davis

This year’s Three Kings Day membership drive was a success! This past December and January, the local community joined the Biblioteca to celebrate this vital Mexican holiday by providing children with library memberships. Some people purchased 120-peso Three Kings Day cards (which contained a free membership) for the children of their housekeepers, gardeners, and neighbors. Other donors simply wanted to give a membership to an interested child.

This year, the Biblioteca partnered with Libros Para Todos (Libros), a project supported by the Literary Sala, which encourages reading and an appreciation for literature in San Miguel de Allende and the surrounding communities. Together they distributed almost 50 cards to local children.

“Illiteracy is down in Mexico, but few books are being read,” said Libros director Daniela Franco. “Reading is a habit best learned as a child,” she added, “and what better way to develop reading skills but in the library and school?”

This exciting partnership between the Biblioteca and Libros Para Todos seeks to grow library membership and develop a new generation of readers in Mexico. “The looks on the faces of the parents when we told them what a library card provides were unforgettable,” said Libros volunteer Tina Bueche, who distributed the cards.

With a Biblioteca membership, a child has book checkout privileges and access to free classes in English, computers, guitar, art, and more. 100 memberships is just the beginning, organizers say. They aim to double the number of cards given out next year.
