Hineni: Leonard Cohen’s Jewish Legacy

Leonard Cohen

By Carole Stone

After decades of probing the human psyche, retired Winnipeg counseling psychologist-turned-playwright Bruce Sarbit delves into one man’s existential search for national, individual, and spiritual identity. As a playwright and essayist, Sarbit searches for stories of lives worth living in the face of limitations, alienation, absurdity, suffering, and death. The poetry and songs of Leonard Cohen inspire, inform, and guide his work.

The Jewish Cultural and Community Center of San Miguel de Allende proudly presents Bruce Sarbit and guitarist Mike Usiskin as they explore Leonard Cohen’s Jewish legacy on Sunday, March 4 at 4pm at the JC3.

A wordsmith seeking wisdom, a psalmist, a lover, and servant of the senses, the late Leonard Cohen, proudly Jewish, was among the great poets and songwriters of our age. From Winnipeg, Canada, his work explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality, and personal relationships. Cohen first pursued a career as a poet and novelist during the 1950s and early 1960s. He launched his music career relatively late, at the age of 33. Throughout his career, Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was a Companion of the Order of Canada, his nation’s highest civilian honor. In 2011, Cohen received one of the Prince of Asturias Awards for literature and the ninth Glenn Gould Prize.

Perhaps Cohen’s most famous song, “Hallelujah,” was first released on his studio album Various Positions in 1984. In 1992, Cohen released its follow-up, The Future, which had dark lyrics and references to political and social unrest.
