Shelter Theater 10th Anniversary Celebration

Open Mic

By David Johanssen

For 10 years, Shelter Theater has been bringing avant-garde theater, live music, and educational events to San Miguel. The anniversary party will take place at Open Mic on Tuesday, February 6 7:30pm. Free beer and popcorn! Shelter Theater also supports groups like Colectivo 41 (a local LGBT rights group) as well as Los Jóvenes del Corazón de México (Educating the youth of central Mexico). We also offer free films in Spanish for Mexican youth on holidays such as “Día de Los Niños.”

Regulars call Shelter Theater’s Open Mic the “Cheers Bar” of San Miguel. Local performer Phil Roger says that, “the Open Mic is a place where the creative spirit is shared and everyone is welcome.” This is your chance for ten minutes of fame on our warm and welcoming stage! Get up and strut your stuff: music, dance, acting, comedy—you can do (almost!) anything you like–or just sit back and enjoy the fun.

If you’re looking to laugh, Geechy Guy performs his hilarious “Dirty Joke Show,” exclusively at Shelter Theater this week. Only your up-tight Aunt Tilly would dare to miss his award-winning show while we have this rare opportunity to see a star at work! In the first half of Geech’s show, audiences will hear his family-rated jokes but after the break, get ready for raunch as Geech trots out “The Dirty Joke Show”.

Thursday, February 8 at 7pm: Continental Blues band w/ Tom Driscoll & Dave Bingham: Tom and Dave have been performing in San Miguel since their inspired jam in 2014. Combined, these two have more than 45 years in the music biz, opening for acts like The Rolling Stones, The Animals, and The Beach Boys; Shelter is honored to have them onstage this week. Tickets available at Biblioteca and online at sheltervg4.com.

So, where the heck is Shelter Theater? Nearby—an easy 10-minute walk from the Jardin! Google us or find our logo on the Que Pasa map in the upper left-hand corner. See our calendar at sheltervg4.com for dates and online tickets. Please note: prepaid tickets released at showtime with no refund.
