Pro Musica Opera proudly announces their much-anticipated annual opera production this season to be the timeless masterpiece Don Giovanni, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Two performances—Friday, February 9, at 7pm and Sunday, February 11, at 5pm—will raise the curtain on the first performances of a Mozart opera in San Miguel in more than 50 years. Both performances take place in the Teatro Angela Peralta, our historic and intimate venue originally designed to showcase opera.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni, a tale of human frailty and courage, is one of the greatest operas ever written, historians proclaim. Comical and entertaining for newcomers not familiar with the plot, this opera is one of the towering giants for opera veterans. Don Giovanni transcends the centuries with its grace, passion, and bravura singing, not to mention the sword fight, seduction scenes, and supernatural climax!

But why has it endured? Why would an opera completed more than 230 years ago remain in the repertory today in all of the world’s great opera houses? How could an opera by a 31-year-old composer still be regarded as one of music’s greatest works?

The answer would surely credit the brilliant team of composer and librettist. The classic legend of Don Juan—Don Giovanni in Italian—provides rich fodder for this 1787 work by the brilliant team of Mozart and his librettist partner, Lorenzo da Ponte. The two geniuses were an exceptional match, worked closely and tirelessly, and together created great works which crown their careers—The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. Together these late operas of Mozart’s are widely considered one of the most cherished pinnacles in all of art—whether music, literature, visual arts, or dance.

But the top explanation for the enduring popularity of Don Giovanni is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The name conjures up legends of one of the greatest child prodigies who ever lived. From a shockingly young age, Wolfgang’s brilliant improvisations and phenomenal musical memory were displayed in the top courts of Europe. This rather idyllic childhood led to an adult life of debt, personal heartbreak, and artistic frustration. Despite his short life—for he died at age 35—Mozart managed to pour every aspect of human nature into his opera characters and make them believable, alive, charming, and conniving. Whether aristocrats or peasants, virgins or villains, Mozart’s characters come to life as rarely before in opera and speak to us through the centuries with their humanity.

The opera has a dream team cast of the Pro Musica Opera Company’s favorite singers including Rodrigo Garciarroyo, Enrique Angeles, Enivia Mendoza, and Dhyana Arom and, of course, the matchless Mario Alberto Hernandez as music director.

If you love the grace of Mozart’s works for piano, his exuberant chamber music, his lyrical concerti for piano and orchestra—or you’ve never experienced one of his operas live—you will want to quickly buy your tickets for Don Giovanni!

Tickets for Don Giovanni at the Teatro Angela Peralta are 250, 350, 750, 800 pesos each and are now on sale on the Pro Musica website (no booking fee) and at all Pro Musica concerts.
