Oh, Those Divas

By Peter Leventhal

In these beautiful and poetic paintings of Terra Mizwa on display at the studio/gallery 2D in the Fábrica Aurora, the artist explores the world of the Diva, a woman of authority, confident in the powers of her unique influence, stylish, and expressive.

The Diva image stretches back into the earliest histories of civilization. In her sculptures, Terra Mizwa has explored this image in terracotta pieces shaped by Paleolithic artists in her previous show. Here she returns to paintings, beautifully rendered with extraordinary skill in drawing and composition, with gorgeous color harmonies. Some of the paintings are inspired by frescoes of the ancient worlds, while others have affinities with magical realism, firmly committed to pictorial realistic depiction while adding an element of magic. They are more akin to symbolism where the invisible is made visible. To know this “Invisible” requires a profound understanding of material reality first, before an entry into the magical.

Oh, Those Divas is an exhibit of painting and sculptures, opening the night of the

Fabrica Aurora Anniversary Fiesta on February 3, 2018 at 5pm in the local 2D.
