Linda Soberman: Empowerment

Six Houses LINDA SOBERMAN

By Margaret Failoni

This extensive thematic exhibition in the Intersección Gallery in San Miguel de Allende by the American artist Linda Soberman, with recent works from 2015 to the present, sheds light on the present-day phenomenon of women’s empowerment. The repoliticization in contemporary art brings together a series of photogravure monotypes, sculpture, and an installation with an artistic vision, which can be read as a seismographic of contemporary civil and political activity. It focuses on the fundamental issues of equality and empowerment.

I first met Soberman at an exhibition of her work dealing with issues of the Soah. An installation of small metal chairs hung like a cascade from the ceiling, with passport photos of missing Jewish women attached to the back of each chair. Superbly created etchings told the whole story. A more recent exhibition held in the Bellas Artes facility dealt with the coming of age of women architects after centuries of anonymity in their field.

Taking this subject one step further, the artist deals with the power of women as builders of society. A brilliant installation of multicolored women forms a vivid spiral on the center wall—once again, she uses the cascading effect—surrounded by brilliantly and dramatically executed monotypes. A few small yet powerful sculptures round out the exhibition.

As if to punctuate the political aspect of the work, and much like the Hollywood Walk of

Fame, Soberman invites all artists, architects and activists—in short, all women who care about the issue of empowerment—to come forward and sign a star that will be attached to the Intersección Gallery floor for the remainder of the exhibition. We suggest a fifty-peso donation for each star to be forwarded to CASA for their program in defense of battered women.

This exhibition is the first of five for the artist in 2018, with four more to come in different museums in the United States. A generous and successful educator in the art of print making, Soberman has seen her work widely collected throughout North America.
