Fábrica La Aurora’s Anniversary Party

LA AURORA IMG_2017

By Edward Swift

On Saturday, February 3, from 5 to 8pm, Fábrica la Aurora will celebrate its 14th year with an anniversary art walk. The celebration will feature live music, new exhibitions, and new galleries. From its beginnings in l902 as a textile factory until its closing in 1990, La Aurora was an essential economic force and a major contributor to the cultural history of San Miguel. Today the repurposed building continues the tradition as a vital part of San Miguel´s history.

At this year’s event, you will see new faces and familiar ones. Galería 8A welcomes Glen Rogers. His paintings are inspired by sacred sites and archetypal symbols. 8A regulars Edina Sagert and Blanca Garcia will show new ceramic sculpture.

Along with his own work, Mario Oliva presents Captive Presences by sculptor Nour Kuri. Her work will be exhibited in the space dedicated to sculpture, which honors all presences, living and dead, captured by the creative process. Toller in the House will feature the work of Toller Cranston, along with that of his lifelong friend Marion Perlet.

Intersección will showcase the work of Santiago Corral and Knut Pani (Registros Sensoriales), Alejandra Mendoza (Slam), Larimer Richards (Confessions of a Welsh Tinkerer), and Linda Soberman (Empowerment/Underconstruction).

Abstract Oaxaca, a group show of Oaxacan artists, will be unveiled in Galería Manuk. The exhibit will initiate a week of creative activities by the artists in the gallery, including a two-day canvas collaboration.

Van Doren Studio will exhibit Las vistas de México en abstracto.

The Skot Foreman Gallery will show paintings by Leonardo Días in the project room, a new, more intimate space for special exhibits.

Terra Mizwa plans to exhibit new paintings and drawings titled Oh, Those Divas.

Prizewinning Mexican silversmith and jewelry designer Lila Parilla has created pieces of jewelry to commemorate each decade of her life: infancy, wedding, and birth of her children, movement in her thirties, spiritual recovery, light and shadow, and abundance of things deserved. Her work can be seen in AlQuimia4.

Keep in mind that newcomer Galería San Francisco Annex has two entrances: one just inside the driveway near the duck pond and another in the small courtyard, accessed via the parking lot. Also in this courtyard is the Art Showroom Gallery of Beatriz Cotaa and Mikkael Kreis. Currently on display are several paintings by Joaquín Piñeiro. One represents the “bird soul that lives in your heart.” A collage of used teabags represents emptiness; all others relate to peace and meditation.

The sculptures and drawings of Benito Martinez Creel will be exhibited by Dirk Jan Kinet Interiors. Kinet, an internationally recognized designer, opened his first showroom outside of Mexico City in La Aurora last August.

Edgardo Kerlegand will exhibit his Prophet series. The work is spontaneous; the prophets in each reveal themselves to the artist during the creation. He says, “Half is imagination, half is from outer space.”

Around the corner, Beatriz Castañeda has expanded her space to include the gallery next door. This expansion provides more display space for her latest work: groups of flowers arranged in vases, set in a barely visible interior space with masses of circular brushstrokes.

In the Calderoni Studio there will be a special section in preparation for Valentine’s Day giftgiving. Verity Roberts, an encaustic/cold wax artist from Australia, and Merry Calderoni will show small, luminous framed paintings along with antique figures from the Carlos Beltran collection.

Jade, the designer of “LUNATIKA” jewelry, will exhibit sterling silver and freshwater pearls in cutting-edge designs.

All galleries will be participating—join us in the celebration.
