Lions Club Trip

By Janice Finch

LIONS

A three-day trip to Xilitla and the Sierra Gorda Missions is on the agenda for the International Lions Club of San Miguel de Allende. The group will depart on Tuesday, February 27, and return on Friday, March 02, on an air-conditioned bus with restroom facilities. The first stop will be in Jalpan to view the mission church and visit a museum there. It may be possible to visit a mission in nearby Conca. The founder of the missions was Fray Junipero Serra, who went on to found the California mission chain. The churches, built in the mid-1700’s, are beautifully restored and are noted for their colorful facades carved with symbolic figures. Lunch (optional) will be at the Misión Jalpan Hotel, where the group will be staying.

The next morning the bus will head for Xilitla and the Edward James gardens, Las Pozas. This is a bizarre collection of concrete buildings, bridges, sculptures, and spiral stairways leading nowhere. It is hoped that the jungle will not reclaim the marvelous surreal fantasy. On the return trip to the hotel and on Thursday, the bus will stop at the other missions.

The bus will also stop in Bernal on the return trip on Friday, for shopping and then lunch (optional). There will be one bring-your-own-bottle cocktail party the first evening with nibbles supplied by the Lions. The cost includes round-trip transportation, hotel, breakfast, tips, and a donation to the Lions to support the clinic, which gives eye exams, dispenses glasses, and does diabetes testing for the needy on Thursday mornings. The total cost is 3,600 pesos per person (double occupancy) and 5,200 pesos for a single. Reservations and deposit must be made by February 2. For information or reservations contact lionstrips@gmail.com or call Janice Finch at 152 5541.
