Democrats Abroad/SMA Get Out the Vote Training Sessions Announced

By Mark Bilker

Democrats Abroad is seeking volunteers who can attend on these dates. This is the first initiative in the chapter’s 2018 Get Out the Vote (GOTV) drive to help register as many American citizens as possible so that they will be able to vote in their state primaries as well as in the November general election.

“Americans abroad can make a difference in these midterms,” said Barbara Erickson, Vice Chair of Democrats Abroad SMA. “Every vote counts and even a few votes can swing an election (or a state legislature!). Between providing one-on-one assistance to people who need help registering and guiding others to online tools they can use to register themselves, we hope to get expats and dual citizens registered in San Miguel.”

Volunteers will learn how to help people fill out the FPCA (Federal Post Card Application) to register to vote and request a ballot. They will be shown the many online tools available for accomplishing self-registration and ballot requests. They will be directed to online sources that can provide answers to the many questions voters have about the process.

Throughout the month of February, Democrats Abroad/SMA will have GOTV registration tables set up at three convenient locations: near the office of US American Consular agent Edward Clancy in La Luciérnaga, the Saturday Mercado Sano Tianguis, and Starbucks on Canal. Check with the Democrats Abroad/SMA Facebook page for updates, including additional locations. Teams of two volunteers will work in 2 two-hour shifts. During the summer, the chapter will organize a follow-up GOTV drive to help those who have not received their ballots cast provisional ballots before the general election.

According to Erickson, volunteers do not have to be permanent or long-time residents of San Miguel, but must be here in February or later in the summer for round two of voter registration. Visitors are equally welcome to participate in this process and experience San Miguel in a meaningful and non-tourist way.

GOTV is a nonpartisan effort for voter registration, available to all citizens living abroad or dual citizens.

To sign up for volunteer training, contact Barbara Erickson at or at 152 0129.
