Barcelona and Shanghai Converge in San Miguel

By Lena Bartula

Opening on Saturday at La Huipilista Artspace on January 27, “The Bird in Me Wants to Sing” features work by Barcelona-based artist Cynthia Fusillo. Lyrical, poetic, always textural, often spiritual, hovering between material and ethereal, her works also introduce her as the first artist-in-residence at the Artspace. She brings with her some of the art she created in her six-month art residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai in 2017. With this work, she was included in the First International Paper Exhibit in Shanghai. Paper dresses, shoes, drawings, prints, and paintings will be collaged for wall installations, representing the breadth and depth of experimentation while on that journey.

Perico Pastor, renowned artist and writer for La Vangardia, says of Fusillo’s work: “Everything is made meticulously and with free rein, with amazing detail, with mystery, with sadness, with humor, made of earth, of wood and of smoke. Revealing and concealing, protecting and exposing, these garments, shoes, and other elements begin to enter into another realm.”

Fusillo herself refers to her work as autobiographical, because “I use my own body as a model or measure for the dresses and figures. I then “collage” my experiences on them, combining several techniques. I like to work with materials that have already been used and I get so involved in a process such as sewing, burning, printing so as not to think so much, somewhat like a meditation. My goal is to shake up those ideas we have about a particular material or form or its use and take it apart so as to create something new and surprising.”

During her residency, Fusillo hopes to create new works from materials she finds in her new environment reflecting her experience in San Miguel.

“The Bird in Me Wants to Sing” opens on January 27, 4–7pm, with a welcome reception for the artist. La Huipilista Artspace is located at Julian Carrillo 1, Colonia Guadalupe. For more information call 415 111 3039.
