By Sara Tylosky

San Miguel’s winter season always includes many events that benefit tourists, locals, and nonprofits. One of the more exciting events to start the new year will be a world-class concert by internationally known Peruvian-born guitarist Alfredo Muro and his accompanying American cellist, James Bailey. The two talented musicians will bring their Duo Apaixonado to San Miguel with an expected sold out event on Saturday, January 20, 6:30pm at St. Paul’s Church, Calzada de Cardo 6. This will be Muro’s first performance in Mexico for 2018.

During this concert, they will offer a delightful evening of solo guitar music plus duets for cello and guitar from Spain to Latin America, and from J.S. Bach to Astor Piazzolla. Duo Apaixonado will display a wonderful blend of talent presenting their own arrangements of one of the outstanding cello-guitar repertoires in the world. As José Felicano said, The music of Alfredo Muro elevates the guitar to a higher plane than most I’ve had an opportunity to hear.”

Guitarist Alfredo Muro, a humble man, has been performing since he was 13 years old after he and his sister entered and won a national talent show in Peru, even though his mother frowned on musical careers at the time. Since then, he has represented Peru and the US in several International Guitar Festivals in Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Canada, Italy, Germany, Austria, Norway, and Taiwan. He has performed in many venues throughout the US, as featured artist at the Kennedy Center for the Millennium Concert Series in Washington DC and at Benaroya Hall in Seattle and The Smithsonian Museum.

Cellist James Bailey grew up in the world of jazz (saxophone) before gravitating to the cello and classical music. He has a cello master’s degree from the University of Colorado and a doctorate from the University of Kansas. He has been both a cello professor and conductor during his years as a classical performer and teacher. Eventually his love of world music led him to a friendship with guitarist Alfredo Muro and they formed a duo dedicated to Latin music of several countries. Dr. Bailey was a music producer of classical, jazz, and world music at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder, Colorado.

Their first CD Carinhoso, released in 2017, features music from German master J.S. Bach to Brazilian master Antonio Carlos Jobim, and will be available for sale at the event.

The concert will benefit the Rural Education Institute, whose goal is to level the playing field in education so that rural kids can have the same opportunities as their urban counterparts. Rural Ed sends skilled, international interns from all over the world into rural community centers to mentor and facilitate programs in literacy, computer skills, and English to kids ages 8–18 to raise the bar for their families for generations to come.
