Ken Basman Homage, a Jazz Celebration

By Victor Monterrubio

I visited San Miguel for the very first time in my life 18 years ago. I was amazed at the quality of the music. I remember that my family and I had dinner in one of the restaurants in Centro, and that night a wonderful jazz duo was playing. And one block away from there, in another famous bar, was Ken Basman with a trio.

Three months later I moved here just to play with this exceptional human being and unique guitar player for more than 16 years. It was a constant chance to learn more and more about the jazz, blues, funk, and rock music. It wasn’t just a gig; it was an everyday “workshop” for me. Ken was truly sharing what he knew about music and how to play with others.

This homage is to Ken and his music. He took San Miguel de Allende’s name so high in the national and international jazz scene! Every jazz musician knew that San Miguel had a spectacular guitar player, and everybody wanted to come here to know him and listen or to record in his studio. I was so lucky to be part of that trio for 16 years and share concerts, rehearsals, recordings, tours, as well as to know other musicians who also shared with Ken in so many ways.

We have now put together a special trio to do him homage: Francisco Lelo de Larrea, one of the best guitar players in Mexico, a Ken Basman student and friend; Adrian Flores, bass player from Mexico City who had the chance to play with Ken in his last two years; and Victor Monterrubio, who played with Ken from 2000 until he passed away. We also have special featured performers, like drummer and singer Bob Kaplan, who also shared years and years of music with Ken.

In this jazz concert we going to play some Ken Basman originals, some of Francisco’s songs, and some jazz standards played in a Ken Basman style.

Don’t miss this opportunity and come to Teatro Angela Peralta next Wednesday, January 24, at 7pm. Tickets: 300 pesos, luneta; 200 pesos, palco and galleria. Tickets available in Teatro box office and at 415 151 9551.
