Scholarship Recipients to Learn English

Volunteer Teachers

By Aly Posner

Mujeres en Cambio and La Biblioteca are pleased to announce that we have joined forces to improve the English language skills of our scholarship recipients. In recognition that greater English-speaking competence and comprehension will increase job opportunities for our students after graduation from high school and university, we have created an English class for our scholarship recipients that will be held at the Biblioteca Saturday mornings from 10am to 12pm.

Although most students are currently studying English in school, the teachers often are not bilingual, and students rarely have an opportunity to practice what they have learned or hear the correct pronunciation of words. Accordingly, the focus of these classes will be to teach an understanding of English while increasing the students’ comfort level and confidence in speaking the language.

Classes will be held at the Biblioteca on Saturdays beginning January 13 and continue through the school year. The lessons will incorporate a workbook, conversation, and a computer lab using Duolingo.

We are seeking volunteer teachers to assist us in this endeavor. ESL certification or experience are a plus, but not required. Our scholarship students are bright, optimistic, ambitious, and delightful. We guarantee you will benefit from the experience.
