A Journey to the Past, Present, and Possible Future

By Jesús Aguado

To celebrate the 475th anniversary of the foundation of the Pueblo de Indios (Town of Indians) of San Miguel of the Chichimecas, the book San Miguel de Allende, Un Viaje al Corazón (A Journey to the Heart) was recently published.

Historian Graciela Cruz, who edited the text, made it clear that the book is not academic, but “a journey” though the photographs of Arturo Suárez, Jesús Herrera, and Sean Reagan.

Erick Suárez told Atención that his father, Arturo Suárez, started taking photographs in San Miguel de Allende in early 1930. He died in 2001 and left his collection to Erick, who, in homage to his father, decided to participate in this book with 20 of his father’s photos. In addition, in the months to come, never-before-seen photographs will be displayed on Calle Jesús.

Cruz commented that this book will leave its mark on the history of San Miguel, because it values the urban landscapes and the architecture here, as well as the daily life and the multiculturalism that identifies the city. “It is a book that features three academic texts. The first is dedicated to the Shrine of Jesus the Nazarene of Atotonilco, the second to the parish of St. Michael the Archangel, and the third—by Luis Felipe Rodríguez—to Ignacio Allende.”

During the presentation, mayor Ricardo Villarreal says that the book shows the beauty of San Miguel in its 600 pages, but now every single Sanmiguelense has the duty of keeping it the way it is.

Un Viaje al Corazón is on sale at the Consejo Turístico, the Teatro Ángela Peralta, and Casa Canal for 900 pesos. Gustavo Vidargas, San Miguel’s municipal director of culture and tradition, told us that the cost to produce 2,000 copies of the book was 900,000 pesos. Proceeds from the sales will be reinvested in a second edition.
