Writers’ Conference Opens New Package Registrations

By Susan Page

“I would not have a career without the San Miguel Writers’ Conference,” says novelist Tawni Waters. “The conversations between sessions with both famous and beginning writers from all over have been profound for me,” says Rebecca Beardsley.

San Miguel International Writers’ Conference and Literary Festival
February 14–18, 2018
Hotel Real de Minas
New Basic Packages Now Available

By far, the best way to take in the full experience of the most highly regarded writers’ conference and literary festival in the Americas is to purchase a conference package. To be on the “campus” of the Hotel Real de Minas for the workshops and during the breaks is “like summer camp for grownups,” said veteran participant, Gael Sherman. Well, maybe winter camp in this case, but the idea still holds. It’s a vacation in your own town, an enlightening, inspiring, and energizing interlude, where the person you least expect turns out to be your new best friend. Or where you unexpectedly find yourself in a conversation with Wally Lamb or Emma Donoghue (“How in the world did you decide to write a novel about such a horrid circumstance?”)

The Writers’ Conference offers three packages, all bargains even if you do not attend every session. The “Full Conference” Package includes seven keynote addresses, seven workshops, five panels, the storytelling and short plays feature on Sunday afternoon, all the receptions, and the Grand Fiesta, plus the new feature we have just added. On opening day, Wednesday, February 14, at 2:00pm, Sandra Cisneros presents a reading, “Hecho en Mexico: New Poems.”

The “Whole Enchilada” Package includes all of the above plus two three-hour intensive workshops on Saturday. The “Basic Conference” Package includes all the meat but none of the gravy: seven keynotes, seven workshops, five panels, but no receptions or parties, and no extras like the Sandra Cisneros event.

If you want to purchase a package, it is important to do so soon because some of the workshops are filling up. Your choice of workshops will be greater the sooner you purchase your package.

“Tell everyone to attend all of the keynotes,” one San Miguel de Allende resident urged. “Every time I pick and choose, I inevitably miss the one everyone loved the most.”

If you are in San Miguel now, as a resident or early snowbird, you have an advantage by selecting your package early because many January through March snowbirds wait until they arrive to buy their packages. Keynotes and workshops do sell out every year.

With a world-famous event happening right here in San Miguel, we all have an excellent opportunity to participate. The 2018 keynote speakers are Wally Lamb (six New York Times bestselling novels); Emma Donoghue (both the book and the movie, Room); Rita Dove (Pulitzer Prize winner, former US Poet Laureate); Joseph Boyden (multi-award winning Canadian novelist); John Vaillant (Jaguar’s Children about Mexicans crossing the border); Jorge Volpi (popular Mexican novelist and essayist); and Jane Friedman (veteran publishing expert).
