Help the SPA Provide a Safe Place for Cats and Dogs

By Megan Gabel

Thank you, SPA supporters, for making it possible for the Sociedad Protectora de Animales de San Miguel de Allende to exist. Because of you, we are able to help Gema, an SPA resident for more than four years whose shyness and climbing skills make it difficult to find her a permanent home. She’s a large dog with very expressive eyes and needs a little coaxing to come out of her shell when dealing with a stranger. Once she gets to know you, the change is dramatic. She wags her tail when she sees it’s her turn for a walk and is generous with kisses.

Because of you, we are able to help Lenny, a nice male cat who has been here since he was seven weeks old. Now approaching his third birthday, he’s never been considered for adoption for two main reasons. He started out being extremely timid and so was overlooked because most adopters want a more engaging personality. Although he has a stunning black coat, with a little white mark on his chest, black cats are difficult to place, be it due to superstition or color preference.

The SPA is committed to providing a safe haven for Gema, Lenny, and all our cats and dogs for as long as necessary. For more than 37 years, the SPA has been the only no-kill shelter for cats and dogs in San Miguel. We average over 200 adoptions annually. Our on-site clinic provides veterinary services for our animals and is open to the public. We do not receive any government support but rely upon the financial help we receive through donations from you.

During this holiday season, please consider making a gift to the SPA as a present to yourself and to others! Who needs another sweater or scarf? It’s easy to donate online at or on our Facebook page at (via PayPal). You may also donate by Mexican or US check to “Sociedad Protectora de Animales de San Miguel de Allende, AC” (full name required) or by US check to “San Miguel Community Foundation” (for a US tax receipt; mark for SPA). Checks may be dropped off at the SPA, Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, or at any La Conexion location (mark envelope “SPA, PMB 18”). Please email with questions. Get that “feel-good feeling” by helping dogs and cats in San Miguel have a safe haven—the SPA—whose primary goal is to provide hope, health, and homes for dogs and cats in need.
