First Festival in Honor of Mezcal

By Karla Ortiz

The history of mezcal in the state of Guanajuato dates back to the seventeenth century, even before that in Oaxaca, the state considered to be a pioneer in mezcal, according to representatives of the organization Somos Mezcaleros Guanajuato, who, along with San Miguel de Allende’s Mezcal-Art mezcalería, will  bring to town the first Festival Amor al Mezcal.

Festival Amor al Mezcal
December 16
Mezcal-Art
Calzada de la Estación 59
Entrance: 200 pesos

The festival, which takes place Dec. 19 at Mezcal-Art’s facilities, seeks to promote the production of this drink, to break with old social clichés that have stigmatized mezcal as a poor quality drink and, on the other hand, also to show that currently, mezcal is not exclusively for fancy events. It is suitable for enjoying in all contemporary environments.

Mezcal can be consumed alone, in prepared drinks, in ice cream, or in small amounts at tastings. Its flavor and aroma make it the favorite drink in many restaurants.

These two groups invite the public to attend this festival and taste a good mezcal. They aim to break local records, bringing together the largest number of brands in the region. On display will be the effort involved in the distillation process and the great variety of flavors of nearly 40 species of agaves, such as Salmiana (from the states of Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, and Zacatecas), Cupriata (from Michoacán), and Espadín (from Oaxaca). Agaves differ widely in flavor because of geographical and climatological differences.

With the 200 peso entrance ticket, you can taste the 15 guest brands of the famous distillate. They come from eight different states of the republic. If you like one, you can buy a bottle from its producer and help promote the mezcal market. On sale will also be handmade beer, cocktails, and Mezcal-Art tlayudas (large tortillas filled with various Mexican specialties.

The festival takes place on December 16th at Mezcal-Art’s facilities on Calzada de la Estación 59. For more information, consult the social networks of Somos Mezcaleros Guanajuato or Mezcal-Art, or send an email to contacto@somosmezcalerosgto.com/
