Afro-Colombian Fusion at Shelter

By David Johanssen

Surprising to many, Colombia has coastal areas with large African-descendant communities. The music in these communities is a passionate blend of African roots mixed with sizzling Colombian salsa. Shelter Theater is proud to bring such sounds to our stage with Timka! a duo from the Colombian Pacific coast, featuring songs from their album, A Cultural Expression Through Music.

Nelo and Stephi, from the dance capital of Cali, will have you grooving to their sensuous merging of African and Latin sounds with Alberto Arana backing them on drums. One fan raves, “Phenomenal rhythms … truly an evening to remember!” Don’t miss “Timka!”—unlike anything you’ve heard before! Tickets are available at La Biblioteca and online at www.sheltervg4.com.

Wednesday, Dec 20, at 7pm, Ensemble San Miguel, with its fusion of Mexican and Latin-American music, is sure to bring down the house when the group hits Shelter. Featuring Liliana Gutiérrez on piano and voice; Xavier Hernández on flute/guitar/voice; Israel Chávez on percussion/violin/voice; and Federico Azuz on bass guitar and voice, the musicians have decades of experience in genres like huapango, son cubano, danzon, samba, and tango. Check out their sound on YouTube; then get your tickets at the Biblioteca or online at www.sheltervg4.com. You won’t want to miss this spicy taste of Mexico!

Every Tuesday at 7:30pm: Open Mic. Here’s your chance for your ten minutes of fame on our warm and welcoming stage! Regulars call it the “Cheers Bar” of San Miguel. So get up and strut your stuff: music, dance, acting, comedy—you can do (almost!) anything you like—or just sit back and enjoy the fun. Ticket prices are 50 pesos audience/30 pesos for performers (includes drink).
