Giving Health, Hope, and Opportunity—One Meal at a Time

By Donna Fullerton

Believe it or not, Feed the Hungry San Miguel is on track to provide an estimated 925,000 school meals by the end of 2017! Every school day, roughly 4,200 children in 34 economically disadvantaged communities receive a hot lunch at school kitchens supported by Feed the Hungry. The support includes not only ingredients for meals but also nutrition, hygiene, and cooking classes for school cooks and mothers. These services help ensure that the benefits last for more than one generation.

It is not unusual for these students to make a long, perilous walk to school on empty stomachs, arriving too tired and hungry to learn. For many children, this school lunch is their only meal of the day. And thousands more are waiting for our help.

Real Results

The results of our work are real and tangible. After we establish a school kitchen, we track each student’s height, weight, body fat, and signs of malnourishment to measure the impact. At some schools participating in the Feed the Hungry meals program, the number of underweight children has been reduced as much as 50 percent.

You Can Help Us Reach Our Goal

We aim to provide at least 600 additional meals every school day in 2018. Here are some ways you can get into the spirit of giving, and help us achieve our goal:

  • Donate. Every dollar and peso goes a long way. With just $20, we can provide a child with a hot, balanced meal every school day for a month. All donations are tax-deductible in the US, Mexico, and Canada (through our partnership with Amistad Canada).

  • Invite Friends to Our Fundraiser. Feed the Hungry’s “March Magic” excursion, March 1–8, 2018, will reveal the secrets of the real San Miguel de Allende. A privileged 22 visitors will enjoy a week filled with art, culture, history, music, phenomenal food, and unforgettable experiences off the beaten tourist track.

  • Sponsor a School Kitchen. Rally your friends and family to sponsor a school kitchen as Founding Donors or Kitchen Angels. Support of a currently unsponsored school enables us to extend our reach to impoverished communities that might otherwise remain on our waiting list for years.

  • Make a Legacy Gift. By making a legacy gift through planned giving, you can make a lifelong impact on the lives of the neediest children of San Miguel.

By supporting Feed the Hungry, you are contributing health, hope, and opportunity to the poorest of the poor in the San Miguel de Allende municipality. You really can make a difference!
