Concert for the Holidays

San Miguel Singers

By Liz Stone

For the 15th year in San Miguel de Allende, the San Miguel Singers will present their winter concert at St. Paul’s Church. This group of singers is composed of people from all over, both San Miguel residents and those who are here only part-time. Their love of singing unites them and the knowledge that singing together joins them together strongly, in spite of varied religions and politics! They are led by Liz Stone, a retired school music teacher, and accompanied by Lorelei Capell, an extraordinary pianist from Chicago. This year’s concert is free, as always. We do, however, pass the basket for voluntary contributions to a local organization that helps people in San Miguel. In the past, we have supported ALMA (Apoyo a los Sanmiguelenses Ancianos, A.C.) with monetary contributions, as well as singing there to entertain the residents. This year we will be supporting Jóvenes Adelante, which aids talented students through university education.

December has been a dark month in the lives of people for many thousands of years. Many religions celebrate the promise of renewed light and hope, and our concert will reflect this. Do come and hear our celebration. As always, we conclude with singing Silent Night, first in German, as it was written; second in Spanish, to honor the beautiful country in which we live; and finally, joined by the audience, everyone together in whichever language they first learned this lovely song! It really works.
