Parking Meters at 20 Pesos an Hour

By Jesús Aguado

Nonresidents who want to park their cars in the Historic Center will soon pay a fare of 20 pesos. Shuttle buses from the San Miguel de Allende’s main entrances to the central area cost be an additional 12 pesos (estimated). This project will release at least 1,300 parking spaces, according to local authorities.

Recently, local officials put out a call to attract companies specialized in public parking to present their projects. The city council will pick the one that will not only provide the applications but is also willing to share at least 32 percent of the profits with the Council of Mobility. The winner will also finance the purchase of 11 brand-new Mercedes Benz buses with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and more comfort. These buses have a total cost of 20 million pesos.

Mayor Ricardo Villarreal told Atención: “Those who want to go by car directly to the Historic Center will have to pay.” Having parking meters will help to release up to 1,000 parking spaces that, according to some conducted studies, “are occupied by the same car from 8am–7pm.” Villarreal charged that when the parking spaces are occupied by the same car, people just drive around looking for a space, and at the same time they bring about traffic and noise. The new technology will prevent that problem.

The chosen company will also be responsible to train people from 150 stores in the Historic Center who do not know how to use the parking applications, or do not have a smart phone, to pay for using the parking space. He remarked that there will be no structures for parking meters for those helpers. Sanmiguelenses, after registering their plates, will pay 10 pesos an hour, or 50 percent of the fare established for visitors.

The shuttle bus from Salida a Querétaro will go from the Visitors Center to calle Juárez, with stops at Luciérnaga and Mirador. The shuttle bus from Mega will stop at calle Nueva and Zacateros. From there it would go to Juárez. The bus coming from Salida a Dolores will arrive at the corner of Hidalgo and Insurgentes. The fare is estimated to be 12 pesos.
