“Classical Music for Everyone”

Chamber Orchestra Rehearsal

By Tim Hazell and Michael Pearl

We are delighted to announce that our Youth Orchestra was recently appointed the official “Youth Chamber Orchestra In Residence” at Bellas Artes/Centro Cultural “El Nigromante.” This signal honor is recognition that the orchestra is a highly regarded entity that reaches out to both the Mexican and expat communities through its inclusive approach to music education.

Bellas Artes, for their part, know that featuring the Orchestra will further enhance their agenda to become the cultural “hub” of San Miguel.

To inaugurate this relationship the Orchestra will perform a special Christmas concert on Sunday, December 3 from 12:00 to 1:15pm, under the historic arches of the beautiful Bellas Artes patio. This will be followed by a “Music For Everyone” series of twelve concerts by the Orchestra on the first Sunday of every month. Seating will be provided for the audience. There is no charge, but donations of any amount are welcome.

We will concentrate on works for orchestra and sections, such as the Mozart Symphony #25 and #31 (Paris), Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, as well as the well-known St. Paul’s Suite for Strings by Gustav Holst. Allan Monahan, the bassoonist with the Guanajuato Symphony, will be joining us as a permanent orchestra member and mentor. Future concerts in the series will include duos, trios, and quartets.

The dedication and pride of the thirty young musicians are demonstrated by their commitment of up to three hours of travel by bus from their homes to rehearsals each Sunday. Their talents are being supported not only by Pro Musica but also by donations that we received from as far away as Nashville, Tennessee, and not least from San Miguel, where significant patrons of the arts have made substantial monthly pledges to continue year-on-year, to help with traveling expenses for rehearsals and concerts—a major budget item.

Recent instrument donors James “Diego” Warburton, and his brother Terry, founder and president of the renowned Warburton Instruments Company in Florida, have provided us with thousands of dollars’ worth of world-class brass and wind instruments.

Despite this generosity, the orchestra still needs substantial donations to fund more intensive rehearsals and to keep pace as new players are added, and the chamber orchestra continues to grow. We invite all those interested in becoming “Friends of the Orchestra,” however large or small your contribution, and whether by way of money or instruments. Patrons can also attend a Sunday rehearsal on the Bellas Artes second floor, an ideal opportunity to become part of a session to watch and hear the musicians “up close and personal” as they learn new music! Our special free “Music for Everyone” Bellas Artes Christmas concert on Sunday, December 3, from 12:00 to 1:15pm, by the Pro Musica Youth Chamber Orchestra is an event not to be missed! Come one, come all, bring the family and show your support!
