Women’s Health: The Secret to Long Life

SERIES Women's Health

By Dr. Grace Lim

Did you know that millions of women die of preventable causes each year? When women age, they become more susceptible to disease and disability. A number of health and social factors combine to create a lower quality of life. Today, women are outliving men, but this difference in survival rate is a recent phenomenon that began in the 20th century. According to the World Health Organization, the gap between male and female life expectancy is greater in high-income countries where women live around six years longer than men. In low-income countries, the difference is around three years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention establishes that the five leading causes of death in females are heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Nowadays, women tend to have delayed or avoided medical care due to lack of time. Most women don’t know the difference between non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors that contribute to various health concerns. Much of the burden of ill health in older women can be reduced or prevented by adequately assessing their personal risk factors. It is never too late to have a health care visit, being an opportunity to take charge of your health and live a longer and healthy life.

In the November 16 Medical Lecture “Women’s Health: The Secret to Long Life,” Dr. Grace Lim will discuss women’s life expectancy, the aging process, risk factors to consider, and the importance of prevention and early detection of the most common disorders in women.
