An Act Of God’s three amigos

By Alan Jordan

The three actors who star in An Act of God are this director’s dream team. Not only are they talented and versatile, but they’re buddies in real life. For this adaption of the play, that’s a huge bonus.

As a director I like to collaborate with actors. I always have an overall plan for the story. However, well trained actors bring so much creativity to a production if they are part of the plan from the conception. That’s why I usually start the wheels in motion with the actors at least several months and sometimes years before it’s ever presented to an audience.

Erik Zavala, Sebastian Vallin, and Rodrigo Demian are the three amigos that bring this farcical comedy, An Act Of God, to life.

Erik Zavala is part of Mexico’s premiere entertainment families. He has been appearing in theater and on television since he was a child, participating in musicals, television dramatizations, and commercials. Most of his work on stage was oriented in what was called Teatro del Cuerpo. He has participated in different performing art projects in national and international festivals like Córdoba-Argentina, Lima-Peru, and different states throughout Mexico. Erik worked under Alan Jordan’s direction in By the Waters of Babylon.

Sebastian Vallin developed a passion for film, and later filmmaking, at age three. This passion for film triggered in him his love for acting. He has starred in, produced, and directed more than 100 short movies, for which he has found an audience on YouTube. Sebastian participated with the Colegio Anglo Americano in the Urban Arts Festival in 2011. Recent film projects include: Human, a tale of survival in a dystopian wasteland, Trapped Inside, a horror/suspense zombie thriller, and Vias.

Rodrigo Demian is a musician and an actor. For the last 20 years he has been closely involved with these two disciplines in a number of ways. He’s a composer who has written scores for theatrical pieces as well as for independent films. In 2012 he co-founded Colect-Híbrido, a theatrical company aimed at the exploration of new forms in the performing arts. More recently, he has joined a cast of English-speaking actors here in San Miguel. His most recent appearance was in Long Days Journey Into Night. Rodrigo is creating original music for this production of An Act Of God.

All three amigos hail from Mexico City and they all met each other while working in different theater projects in San Miguel.

An Act Of God was mainly written as a monologue when presented on Broadway. Our adaptation, using all the original dialogue, is a play within the play. I have utilized the camaraderie that already exists between these three excellent and totally bilingual actors. The play is performed in English with Mexican spice.
