San Miguel de Allende recently held its first Oktoberfest. At this event, several craft beers were offered, including Goss, La Inmortal, Xakúa, Gallo de Oro, Dos Aves, Sangre de Tiburón, and Allende. And the well-known German beer sponsor, Paulaner, was in high demand among the attendees.

The ribbon cutting was done by Irma Villanueva and Daniela Doig, organizers of the even; Monika Von Allworden, Honorary Consul of Germany in Guanajuato; Carlos Enríquez Rivera, Director of Social Communication of the Secretary of Tourism of Guanajuato; and Nancy Patlán on behalf of the Municipal DIF. Monika Von Allworden was in charge of uncovering the barrel sponsored by Paulaner to open this first festival. During the event, several contests were held: for festive costumes, the best food, best beer, and a drawing for the four passes for balloon trips.

Blanca Salinas, Director of Fashion Days; Adriana Martínez, designer at Martinez Jabalera; and Irma Dena, owner of the boutique San Miguel Arcángel, were the jury in charge of awarding the prize for the best costume, which was won by René Holzmichael with his impeccable outfit from Bavaria. Susan Knight York from Cupcakes and Crablegs was in charge of awarding the prize for the best dish, which was given to the choripanes (Argentinian specialty sandwich made with sausage and chimichurri) of Buenos Aires Bistro. Sommelier Maitre d’ Raymundo Vázquez was in charge of awarding the prize for the best beer. That was taken away by the Goss brewery. The event was attended by the public from all over the Bajio area: León, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Comonfort, Irapuato, Guanajuato, San Miguel, and even from Germany. From very early, people were tasting the variety of handcrafted beers and the food. The children had a space to play and the dogs, a space to lie down. Everyone was invited. The crowd’s acceptance of the event astonished the organizers. The atmosphere was very energized, and attendees stayed up late into the night dancing on the grass and stage. One thing left to look forward to is enjoying this international event again in its next edition.
