Timka: Why We Bring the Music

Timka!, a duo from the dance capital of Cali, Colombia, will have you grooving to their passionate blend of African mixed with sizzling Latin sounds next week at Shelter Theater. We recently sat down with “Nelo” and “Stephi” to learn how they find that groove.

Shelter: So why do you want to bring your unique sound to San Miguel? Why here?

Nelo: San Miguel is a place where open-minded people come from all over the world, so we know they will welcome our multicultural sound. Our music is not only Colombian but has deep African roots, too.

Shelter: What is the craziest thing that has happened during a performance?

Stephi: Once, during a concert, my bra came undone, and I had my hands behind my back trying to fix it. I kept dancing and people thought it was just part of the dance!

Shelter: Do you still get nervous before a performance?

Stephi: Sure! But being nervous is part of the process and gives us energy; you never know what might happen—so we use it.

Shelter: What advice would you give to young performers just starting out?

Nelo: First, be willing to take risks. Prepare, prepare, prepare…but believe in it and have fun. Be in the moment and…in the groove!

Timka! plays at Shelter on Friday, November 3, at 7pm. Says one fan, “Phenomenal rhythms… truly an evening to remember!” Tickets are available at the Biblioteca and online at sheltervg4.com.

Argentinian troubadour Luis Lujan will showcase his original music at Shelter Theater on Saturday, November 4, at 7pm. With a wide range of influences and a huge vocal range, Luis seeks to create an intimate experience between him and his audience. Tickets are available at the Biblioteca and online at www.sheltervg4.com. “Luis’s gorgeous tenor voice with just the right balance of vibrato will thrill you to the core,” says the Vallarta Tribune.

So, where the heck is Shelter Theater? Nearby! Our logo’s on the Que Pasa map in the upper left-hand corner, an easy 10-minute walk from the Jardin.
