Sergio Garval: Paintings and Master Drawings

Paty y kinky II

Sergio Garval Suave Patria

By Margaret Failoni

Sergio Garval needs no introduction to the San Miguel public, having exhibited his work over the last few years both in the Intersección Gallery and in the El Nigromante/Bellas Artes. With this exhibition, the Guadalajara artist returns with a few oil paintings of his fascinating women, but above all, an incredible, exquisite selection of works on paper, lithographs, etchings, drawings, and gouaches, covering the vast gamut of different characters and personalities presented in his work over the past several years with an incredible iconic and aesthetic power. Many of these works have been culled from museum presentations and have been carefully chosen and curated. The two oil paintings of Garval’s always sensuous women are painted in bold strokes, brilliantly rendered color and thickly physical. The third large work of a beautiful, gun-toting guerrilla-girl is executed in bold charcoal strokes. In the past year, Garval has concentrated on creating a gigantic group of sculptures to be placed at the entrance of Guadalajara coming in from the airport. Small versions of these figures were to be included in this exhibition, but were not completed in time. He promises to send them upon completion, and they will be presented to the public within the year. But meanwhile, we will marvel at the superb technique and beauty of vision in the work presented in this exhibition.
