Dear Editor

I very much appreciated Jesús Aguado’s article “A Journey to the Past” in the October 13 edition of Atención. Aguado’s thought-provoking description of the haciendas throughout the states of Guanajuato and Queretaro serves as a testament of the rich history surrounding San Miguel de Allende. As he wrote, “it is possible to breathe, smell, and touch the history of the golden age of great haciendas, the basis of the economy in New Spain for more than 300 years,” right in our back door.

During the past year, I have been on many of the hacienda tours sponsored by the Biblioteca and led by Magdalena Copado and Santiago González. We have been to haciendas in ruin and haciendas completely restored, each of which carry their own story. González’ knowledge of the history of each changes the tour from a sight-seeing adventure into a cultural tour. Individually we cannot enter many of these of the haciendas, so I appreciate Copado and González’ efforts to provide access. I have learned so much about the fascinating history of the Camino Real and the hacienda culture surrounding San Miguel de Allende. I look forward to the next tour and appreciate Aguado’s article. I urge readers to read the article at
