Celebration of San Rafael, Arcángel

By Cindy Cunningham

You are invited to join the festivities of the Festival of San Rafael in the Barrio of San Juan de Dios on Sunday, October 29. San Rafael has found a place in many religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, and is variously known as the patron of happy meetings, travelers, and brides and grooms, among others.

Kicking off the weekend will be a youth concert at the beautiful San Juan de Dios Church, home to statues of the archangels San Rafael and San Gabriel, at 7pm on Friday, October 27.

Following a Holy Mass on Sunday morning, October 29, at 9am, Las Mañanitas is sung. The birthday wish for the saint is followed with a procession through the streets of the barrio with the statue of San Rafael accompanied by dancers, a band, and a group of dancing guards at 9:30am.

This mass and procession will be followed by repeat performance of mass at noon and the parade through different streets at 12:10pm. At 4pm, the locos will dance with a final mass at 6pm. Each procession and the final mass are followed by fireworks.

Throughout the day Mexican snacks, soft drinks, lottery tickets, and other items will be available for purchase.

San Juan de Dios is located on the corner of San Antonio Abad and San Rafael (see map in the center of Qué Pasa). It is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit when becoming acquainted with San Miguel. In addition to Spanish masses throughout the week, mass is celebrated in English on Sundays at 10:30am with Father Dante presiding.
