La Biblioteca and its Donors, Solidarity Work for the Community

By Karla Ortiz

Children are open to learning. A possibility for more children to enjoy the pleasure of discovering new worlds has arrived at La Biblioteca Pública through an anonymous donation.

The best way to educate the world is to encourage children’s education. Provoking interest in reading in the youngest children is fundamental to support them in cultural enrichment, improve their language, develop the ability to concentrate and memorize, and to stimulate their imaginations. In the long run, their knowledge will grow and their way of seeing life will be different, since reading is the key to information. Otherwise, getting it is not so simple.

Sometimes children have permission to stay in the library for a while and enjoy a good reading experience and sometimes they can only stay for a short time. Usually, enjoying the benefit of borrowing and taking books home is difficult for low-income children who are unable to visit the library often or for very long.

Many charitable groups care about educating children for the future of the world and work together. A worthwhile goal like this not only makes people commit themselves to alleviating obstacles other people encounter, but it is also of great benefit for health. Studies have found that it improves mental health and lengthens life, according to work published in the journal Health Psychology.

Of those who choose to volunteer assistance in the education of children, some remain anonymous, having only the desire to help. The Biblioteca Pública recently experienced such an act of solidarity with the sole purpose of promoting reading among children of scarce resources. An anonymous group of foreigners decided to make a donation of $3,600 pesos to provide library memberships for children who come from Casa Esperanza to the San Miguel de Allende Public Library. With these memberships, children will be able to enjoy the services offered by the library; register for courses and workshops that the public library offers free of charge, and borrow books to help them with their homework or to enriching their imaginations.

At the Biblioteca we thank all the anonymous donors who believe in our mission and who work along with us through actions like these. Thank you!
