XXIII International Jazz & Blues Festival

By Pavel Cervantes Zavala

San Miguel de Allende is ready for that artistic improvisation of jazz and soul. The International Jazz & Blues Festival, one of the most important in Latin America and the longest running in its genre in Mexico, its XXIII edition, will perform to fill the atmosphere with rhythm and meaning.

After more than two decades, the Festival has brought together, not only the most representative groups of jazz and blues, but also the most select audiences who have cheered the musical and vocal quality of the bands participating. This year, we are sure you will also applaud the quality of the invited dancers.
For 2017, the International Jazz and Blues Festival promise to satisfy even the most rarefied musical palates and leave you with an exquisite Colombian flavor. As part of the year-long program between México and Colombia established earlier in 2017, seeking to strengthen the relationship between the two nations, the Festival will include part of the 100 cultural and academic activities planned for 2017–2018.

From Wednesday, November 15 to Sunday, November 19, the Ángela Peralta Theater will host international musicians and artists that will create an interesting musical fusion.

For the opening, we will start with a Double Concert. The duet Jenny Beaujean and Benjamin Garcia—voice and acoustic bass (Jazz)—and Las Billies female group A Capella (Jazz), comprised of Leika Mochan, Claudia Arellano, Luz Varela, Citlalli Toledo, Ingrid Beaujean, and Jenny Beaujean, are all from Mexico City. For the next day the extraordinary tap dancer Sarah Reich, performer, choreographer, and instructor from Los Angeles, California, is one of the new leaders of its kind worldwide. She was named as one of the “25 To Watch” in the article of the United Sates magazine “Dance 2009”.  Sarah has been a very sought-after dancer in different international festivals and currently belongs to the group “Postmodern Jukebox.” Her videos, dancing to the rhythms of jazz and blues, are a pure delight to the senses.

On Friday, November 17, the Vanessa Collier Blues Band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, (saxophonist and songwriter) recently nominated for the 2017 Blues Music Award (BMA) will perform. She is returning from a European tour of 11 countries with Ruf’s Blues Caravan, alternating with the United States throughout 2017. Vanessa is an energetic combination of Blues, Funk, Rock and Soul. On Saturday, November 18  we will have another double concert, celebrating the “Colombia –Mexico Year 2017 – 2018” with the special participation of the “Inguna Colombia Jazz Fusión Group”, from Bogota, Colombia. They propose to mix and reinterpret the Colombian musical tradition through the elements and sonorities of Jazz and contemporary music. They have been winners of several prizes in composition and interpretation in Colombia.

The Chris Bergson Blues Band, New York singer and guitarist, “is one of the most creative composers of modern blues music.” (All Music Guide) Chris has shared the stage with BB King, Norah Jones, and Etta James to name just a few.

A longtime tradition of the festival is to end the musical celebration with a tribute. This year’s tribute will be performed by the group of bass players Antonio Lozoya – Jazz & Blues, The Collective (Beneficiary of the Scenic Career Program of the National Fund for Culture and the Arts). The tribute will be for the legend Eric Clapton.

Concurrently with the musical presentations, the festival offers a variety of free activities, including a jazz workshop, covering the methodology behind the musical language, and among the audiovisual activities, movie cycle, including a selection of allusive jazz and blues projections.

This is an educational musical–visual journey to nourish the spirit and for collective enjoyment. Tickets are now available through Paypal and at the Ángela Peralta box office prices from 200 – 550 pesos.
