Moving Stronger: Getting Beyond Degenerative Joint Disease

Dra. Chanel 2

By Chanel Palencia

Throughout life, we are constantly submitting our joints to day-to-day stress. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of joint disease, affecting more than 30 million individuals in the United States alone as the leading cause of chronic disability in older adults. It is defined as the gradual deterioration of the cartilage in a joint affecting mainly the elderly.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include deep, achy joint pain exacerbated by extensive use (primary symptom), reduced range of motion, and crepitus and stiffness during rest, with morning joint stiffness usually lasting for less than 30 minutes. Treatment involves these main goals: pain control, joint mobility and function improvement, weight reduction or maintenance, and healthy lifestyle acquisition. Early intervention can control the symptoms and increase the quality of life.

On Thursday, October 19,, Dr. Chanel Palencia will present her medical lecture “Moving Stronger: Getting beyond Degenerative Joint Disease.” During the lecture, she will discuss different diagnosis and treatment strategies, the importance of physical therapy to help patients regain mobility, as well as prevention and risk factors. She will also explain the role of physiatrists, who assist patients with physical impairments, restoring functional ability and quality of life.

Dr. Palencia received her medical degree in physical medicine and rehabilitation from the Universidad de Guadalajara, her degree in neurorehabilitation from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and is a graduate from National Institute of Neurology & Neurosurgery. She has published articles on glenohumeral osteoarthritis and the use of botulinum toxin in acute post stroke patients in neurorehabilitation. Certified by the Mexican Council of Rehabilitation Medicine, Dr. Palencia practices medicine in San Miguel de Allende and Guadalajara.

Dr. Palencia will present on Thursday, October 19, from 4–5:30pm in the Sala Quetzal at the Biblioteca. We ask people to RSVP beforehand. Please email or call Mx. cell: 415 108 0810 or Vonage 971 327 7187 to notify us of your attendance. Cost of the session is 100 pesos.

The Medical Lecture Series is presented by Peace of Mind in San Miguel and H+ Hospital San Miguel. Every second Thursday of the month, local board-certified doctors will offer key information on how to treat and prevent chronic illness, accidents, and common ailments.

Peace of Mind in San Miguel is a community service project created by Melanie Lansing and Clementina Beas, who are devoted to raising awareness among the English-speaking community on how to be prepared for medical emergencies in San Miguel.
