Morganna’s Premiere “Dos Vidas en Una” at Teatro Ángela Peralta

By Sarahí Valverde

Morganna was born in San Miguel de Allende. She grew up as a boy who was teased and bullied. This boy was slight and rather feminine and had a beautiful high voice. His father, wanting to make him more of man, sent him for singing lessons, which he thought would lower his voice. Instead, what was discovered was that he was a very talented countertenor. He studied voice at the conservatory and went on to a career as a male opera singer. However, the authentic person was not male, but female. Thus, the journey to be Morganna began. She entered a singing contest with a large cash prize and won, allowing her to realize her dreams to go to Bangkok to have gender confirmation surgery.

This was very tough for a traditional Mexican family. It went against their attitudes and values. At first, they would not see her. It was tough on her partner, but little by little, they came to see the rightness of it.

As a feminine boy with a high voice, Morganna was bullied. She left San Miguel as soon as she could. When she recently sang a concert at the Teatro Ángela Peralta, the sold-out house gave her a standing ovation, but she remembered that on the last time she sang there as a boy in high school, she was booed. Yes, thing have changed. At first, her father had refused to see her, and she was not allowed to stay in the family’s house. However, little by little, he is coming around. Now, she stays at the family home, and her dad is beginning to acknowledge that he has three sons and a beautiful daughter. This family and the Mexican community in San Miguel are quite conservative, but they saw the truth, the rightness in accepting Morganna.

Today in San Miguel, Morganna is embraced. They know her story and they love her. She and Mauro Ledesma just recently represented San Miguel in Ottawa, Canada, to perform for their Canadian Sister City’s anniversary celebration. The movie of her live and her memoir published by Random House are coming out soon. In October there will be special viewing of the film and release of the book here in San Miguel.
