The Tortured Genius of Frida Kahlo

By David Johanssen

Frida Kahlo persevered through a private life of illness and pain while cultivating an open and irreverent public persona. Born in Mexico in 1907, Frida became an international sensation in the world of modern art and radical politics. Although plagued by ill health since contracting polio at the age of six and later disfigured in a horrific traffic accident as a teenager, Kahlo remained a vibrant force in art and political circles, a symbol of empowerment for women and for the disabled. The influence of traditional Latino culture on her work has led to her recognition as a figurehead for its revival.

We begin with The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo Wednesday, October 4, at 5pm, featuring interviews with many of Kahlo’s friends, including author Carlos Fuentes, along with a broad visual archive of her life, including photographs, movie clips, and paintings. A discussion after the documentary will ask why Frida made such a lasting impression on Mexico.

We continue with Frida on Friday, October 6, at 5pm. In her breakout role, Salma Hayek ages some 30 years onscreen as she charts Frida Kahlo’s life from feisty schoolgirl to Diego Rivera’s protégée and world-renowned artist. The Detroit News calls it, “passionate, provocative, hilarious, tragic, and just dizzyingly beautiful to behold.”

They’ve never rocked better than The Rolling Stones Live in Havana! As the lads took to the stage under a perfect ‘Havana Moon’ in front of an ecstatic crowd, the crowd knew that this was a life-changing cultural moment. Mick Jagger welcomed the massive crowd: “Finally the times are changing, Cuba we are so happy to be here!” The Daily Telegraph calls it, “an epic and history-making performance!” See the joyful magic of that night unfold on Shelter’s big screen with surround stereo!
