What’s Your Story? Express yourself

Elizabeth Matthews

By E. Matthews, M. Lescher, N. Harris

A new chapter begins in San Miguel de Allende with the What’s Your Story? (WYS) project. Drawing on years of collective experience in family counseling, pastoral counseling, education, law, art, and writing, WYS has developed an innovative program to inspire, empower, and transform individuals, families, and communities through the shared wisdom of life stories and learned values.

The project is a collaborative effort of Elizabeth Matthews, MA, LPC; Marirose Lescher, JD, M Div, PhD; and Nettie Anthony Harris, MA.

What’s Your Story? Only you can tell your story. Have you been thinking about writing it down? Do you want to leave a personal legacy or gain greater self-understanding? Are you looking for some help to get started? WYS provides a unique opportunity for you to explore who you really are and to set it down through your own eyes and words for family and history. We are, all of us, living stories seeking to find a voice by which we can be truly known. Our stories connect us with our own voice, others, this universe, and the mystery of all life.

WYS offers ongoing workshops to encourage and support you on your path. In small and large group sessions, you will be guided, inspired, and provided with tools to wrestle with your demons, play with your angels, and connect with what matters most. You will have the opportunity to trust, reclaim, and share your experiences in a safe environment. WYS will offer one-on-one support, as well. If audio-video recordings are your preferred mode of expression, they have that too.

WYS also offers workshops in the art of letter writing to share love, gratitude, enduring values, and lessons about living life deeply. Have you wanted to tell the special people in your life something important about commitment, friendship, conflict, grief, forgiveness? WYS can help you write your message thoughtfully and personally. Time is finite and it may indeed be the time to finally say what hasn’t been said—to make the implicit, explicit; the hidden, seen; the unformed, formed.

In a celebration of life, WYS additionally facilitates the collection of stories and memories of family and friends to commemorate family and lifecycle events. These stories and memories may be collected in written or audio-video form. When I think of you … is a way to link us, one to the other, in communities of memory. Sharing our stories and memories is a powerful experience that can be deeply touching and provide healing and great joy!

“Instructions for living a life.

Pay attention.

Be astonished.

Tell about it.”

Mary Oliver

In the spirit of Dia de Los Muertos, WYS will offer a workshop on legacy letters—an ethical will bestowing personal and enduring values. The workshop will be held at Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15, Zona Centro, on two Thursdays: October 19 and 26 from 1–4pm, and 1–3pm, respectively.
