The Future of Food

By Rob Lerner

You are invited to view a movie that will surprise and educate you about the future of food on our planet and about the controversial practice of genetically modifying organisms (GMOs). Following the movie there will be a question and answer session and discussion. The event is presented by i3: Ideas that Inform and Inspire.

Producing twice as much food to meet the demands of a growing population may be the single greatest challenge facing humanity. We face diminishing resources in a changing climate and must protect biodiversity and the destruction of natural habitats, while working to feed the entire planet.

Modern agriculture contributes a third of global greenhouse gas emissions and is a leading cause of groundwater pollution and oceanic dead zones, frequently depleting the very aquifers on which it depends. Large multinational corporations dominate the industry—driven by the profit motive, often without regard to environmental or social consequences.

The term “GMO” (genetically modified organism) has come to stand for everything wrong with industrial agriculture. What are GMOs and what role do they play in our food production systems? Is genetic engineering of food crops necessarily at odds with sustainably feeding the world’s growing population?

The film Food Evolution sets out to answer these questions with a science-based approach that separates ideology from facts.

Feast on facts by attending this movie on Friday, September 29, at the Santa Ana Theater in the Biblioteca at either 4pm or 6:30pm. Admission is 80 pesos. Tickets are available at the Santa Ana Theater box office or on line at
