Mariachi in English Sing-Along

San Francisco Church with a red sky

By Marcela Andre López

September is full of parties celebrating Independence Day and the patron saint of San Miguel Allende, the Archangel St. Michael, whose feast day is September 29.

Here is a faithfully-rendered translation of this poetic and musically-rich song you can request from the mariachis in the Jardín or at parties.

Red Sky is a song of longing to return to a beloved and is full of poetic images with which you can wax ecstatic and actually understand what the song says with this handy translation.

The YouTube clip song is performed by Miguel Aceves Mejía, but it has been a beloved piece in the repertoire of all the greatest singers of Mexican traditional ballads with mariachi musicians. ¡Viva México!

“Cielo Rojo,”(Red Sky), written by Juan Záizar Torres. Sing along here:

Original Translation to English by Marcela Andre López:

Without your love,

I am walking,

I am walking,

And I know not

What to do…

Not even the sky-heaven

Answers me

When I ask about you,

I have not

Been able to forget you

Since the night,

Since the night,

When I lost you…

Shadows of doubt and jealousy

Just wrap

Around me

Thinking of you

Let me look for you,

And if I find you, and if I find you,

Return again,

Forget the past,

Don´t remember anymore:

That yesterday (2X)

(with high note on “acuérdes,” (remember)

While I´m asleep,

I dream that

We are going,

The two of us closely

To a very blue sky,

But, when I awake,

The sky is red,

I am without you.

Although I may be

Culpable of that

Sad, that sad

In the Name of God

My Eyes, (Beloved)

Return to love me again

Return, my love

Let me look for you

And if I find you,

And if I find you,

Return again…

Forget the past, and

Don´t remember anymore…

That yesterday (2X)

(with high note on “acuérdes,”(remember).
