A Farewell to a Beloved Friend

OBIT ALFRED

By Louis Marbre-Cargill

San Miguel’s beloved friend and benefactor of opera at the Biblioteca, Alfred Pepping, died last Thursday afternoon. He was surrounded by his loving family and a memorial is planned for this fall. Alfred had a smart and intelligent heart. His wit and debonair charm will be so missed, but since he has bequeathed his substantial opera library to the Biblioteca, his spirit will continue to benefit us all through opera video presentation each Monday at 4pm.

Alfred Joseph Pepping III was born on October 7, 1933, in Jersey City, NJ, where he lived with his loving parents, Alfred and Margaret Pepping, and his sister Patricia Pepping. He studied Political Science in New York City. He at the age of 23 married Maria Eugenia Valles Septien on February 22, 1958, in México City. He was blessed with eight children and 23 grandchildren.

He will be missed by his friends in San Miguel de Allende and especially by his children, Alfred, Alexander, Patsy, Frederick, Gini, Laurence, Monica and Christian. May he rest in peace.

His friend Craig wrote:

“Mr. Pepping is at peace. He hurts for nothing. He worries for nothing. He longs for nothing. He is truly at peace.

When I think of him, I will think of his pride for his children, and his telling of all their accomplishments. There is nothing like the loving pride of a father. I will think of his passion for music and his love for details especially when it comes to music. I will think of his loves in life and his love for life. I will think of his genuine hospitality. It wasn’t enough for me to be comfortable; I had to be content. It wasn’t enough to be welcomed; I had to feel his warm embrace. It wasn’t enough to have libations; my cup was not allowed to be empty. It wasn’t enough to be invited to dinner; we had to break bread.

Life is full of choices but most of the time, the menu is already set. We cry now, you longer than me, because it’s time to cry.

But after my tears, I will choose to remember the friendship of my friend.”
