Fest for the Breast

Mujeres en Cambio is honored to have art historian and lecturer Janet Dawson as guest speaker for a very special event, Fest for the Breast: A Celebration of Breasts in Art and Health. Our host for this elegant seated luncheon will be the Hotel Hacienda Mexiquito in Colonia Manjarrez de Mexiquito (near Fábrica Aurora—directions will be provided with your ticket) on Thursday, September 21 from 2–4pm.

The female breast, the source of life-giving nourishment, is considered a thing of beauty and has long been a popular and frequently controversial subject for artists and sculptors. Janet’s illustrated presentation will explore the myriad ways in which breasts have been depicted in art throughout history.

The story begins more than 35,000 years ago and during the course of this visual journey, you will see breasts galore—those associated with womanhood and fertility; others exemplifying religious, maternal, erotic, feminist, and political representations; and, of course, the medical perspective. It promises to be a fascinating tour!

Born and educated in England, Janet has lived and studied around the world. She has an MA in art history from the University of London and a Medil from the University of Toronto. After living in Mexico City for five years, Janet now lives in Tepoztlán in the state of Morelos, where she continues to research new topics for her lectures and write essays on selected artists. A freelance art historian, Janet says her three passions are art, Mexico, and food. She was Scholar-in-Residence for several years at the cooking school Cocinar Mexicano in Tepoztlán, where she lectured on the role of food and traditions in Mexican art.

This unique event is also an opportunity for Mujeres en Cambio to recognize and honor those women who are our members, family, friends, and guests and who are cancer survivors. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, but we are getting a head-start in acknowledging this issue so crucial to women’s health.

As a special treat, we will raffle a beautiful piece of jewelry donated by Kay Howard, local resident and designer. We hope you will join us; we promise you will leave nourished of mind and body!

Tickets are 400 pesos and are available at Tesoros at the Biblioteca, Insurgentes 25; Solutions Mail Service, Recreo 11; and Abrazos Boutique, Zacateros 24.

Mujeres en Cambio is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships, eighth grade through university, to underserved young women in rural San Miguel. More than 95 percent of all funds raised go to our scholarship recipients. Please go to for further information.
