Virgen Peregrina de la Ermita

By Jesús Aguado

The Virgin of Loreto is visible in the niches of houses and chapels of San Miguel de Allende. She also has a street named after her in a neighborhood that was once called the Barrio de Loreto. In 1736 the Virgin was given the title of Grand Patroness of the Villa of San Miguel el Grande, and at that time the festivities in her honor were as lavish as those of St. Michael the Archangel.

Linked to the Canal family, the statue of the Virgin of Loreto arrived in San Miguel, and there was a big celebration when they took her to her niche in the Oratorio church. The festivity in her honor always took place from 22–29 September, until war broke out.
