International Internships Prepare Local Scholars to Be Global Citizens

ROTARY

By Tom Schneider

Why are international companies flocking to San Miguel? There is no doubt our great location is very appealing, with easy access to Central and South America, as well as to the US and Canada. More importantly, these international giants see a labor force that is superior to others in the world, according to local industry officials.

Of course, raw talent is one thing, but most companies need educated employees, 80 percent of whom need to be engineers. Enter Jóvenes Adelante (JA), a nonprofit that grants scholarships to local Mexican honor students who otherwise could not afford to attend university and break the cycle of historic economic disparity.

Jóvenes Adelante’s slogan is “Educating the Brightest to Light Up the World,” and it is living its slogan through a number of its students who are earning international internships. Come to Rotary Tuesday, September 12, at 12:30pm, when JA President Robin Loving shares the amazing stories of JA students who have earned internships in Asia, Europe, the US, and Cuba. The meeting will be free and in English.

Loving is a nonprofit professional who cofounded the Nonprofit Resource Network to connect and inform and connect nonprofits, benefactors, consultants, and volunteers.

Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change. For more information, contact President Fred Collins at presidentmidday@berkleyline.com and see RotarySMAMidday.org.
