Buena Vista Social Club

BuenaVista

By David Johanssen

The Buena Vista Social Club was a members’ club in Havana, Cuba, in the 1940s. The club held dances and musical activities, becoming a popular location for musicians to meet and play. In the 1990s, nearly 50 years after the club was closed, it inspired a recording made with traditional Cuban musicians, some of whom were veterans who had performed at the club during the height of its popularity. The album went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, helping to introduce Cuba’s rich musical heritage and pre-evolutionary past.

On Wednesday, September 13, at 5:00pm, Shelter presents the groundbreaking documentary Buena Vista Social Club. Ry Cooder gathered some of the greatest names from the history of Cuban music, some as old as their nineties, to collaborate on the best-selling album. According to Boulder Weekly, “The music is incredible enough on its own—but the lives and the culture behind it, that’s what makes this documentary a must-see!”

We continue our salute to Mexican cinema on Friday, September , at 5:00pm with Los Olvidados, the classic 1952 film that reinvigorated director Luis Buñuel’s career. According to The New Yorker Magazine, “It’s a masterpiece that tangles individual and social ills into a knot which, as we’re warned in an opening voice-over, offers no easy way to untie.”

On Saturday, September 9, at 6:00pm Shelter presents Monterey Pop. On a beautiful June weekend in 1967 the first Monterrey International Pop Festival captured the spirit of the 60s, featuring career-making performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Simon and Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, and The Who. The Village Voice calls the film, “One jaw-dropping performance after another.” Put on your bell-bottoms and come relive the “Summer of Love” on our big screen, immersed in our surround-sound stereo for the best concert experience in San Miguel!
