On Wednesday, August 30 at the Angela Peralta Theater at 7pm there will be an extraordinary concert of the XXIII International Festival of Jazz and Blues of San Miguel de Allende, which will be dedicated to the soul singer Joe Cocker.

John Robert “Joe” Cocker (1944–2014) was an English singer and musician. He was known for his gritty voice, spasmodic body movement in performance, and definitive versions of popular songs. Cocker’s musical influences growing up were Ray Charles and Lonnie Donegan.

Cocker’s cover of the Beatles’ With a Little Help from My Friends reached number one in the UK in 1968. He performed the song live at Woodstock in 1969 and at the Party at the Palace concert for the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2002. His version also became the theme song for the TV series The Wonder Years. His 1974 cover of You Are So Beautiful reached number five in the US. Cocker was the recipient of several awards, including a 1983 Grammy Award for his US number one Up Where We Belong, a duet with Jennifer Warnes. Cocker was ranked number 97 on the Rolling Stones 100 greatest singers list.

I just need to communicate everything through my voice. I think that’s one of the reasons why my fans have stayed loyal to me over all the years. Through my voice I express emotions. That’s all I do.” Joe Cocker

One of the artists who will participate is Freddie Maguire, singer of Italian origin who has a very particular voice—a style and feeling very similar to that of Joe Cocker. In the choir will be singers Ana Karen Aboytes and Aurora Nunez, extraordinary Mexican voices with great professional trajectory. On the guitar will be Julian Arcos, an outstanding local musician who plays gypsy jazz (Tribute to Django Reinhardt concert in July), jazz, funk, Latin, rock, and more.  On the drums will be Carlos De Aguinaga, a musician from Celaya with extensive experience in diverse musical genres including soul and R & B. On the bass will be Antonio Lozoya, a musician based in San Miguel de Allende for more than 20 years with extensive experience in jazz and other musical genres.

We will have the opportunity to re-live these great songs that made Joe Cocker, including “Unchain My Heart,” “With a Little Help from My Friends,” “The Letter,” “You Are So Beautiful,” “Up Where We Belong.” and “You Can Leave Your Hat On,” among others.
