Afro-Colombian Groove with “Timka!”

Timka 5

By David Johanssen

What happens when African rhythms meet Latin beats? Fireworks of the best kind! The music in the African-descended coastal communities of Colombia offer a passionate blend of African roots mixed with sizzling Colombian salsa. Shelter brings that amazing sound to our stage with “Timka!” a supercharged couple featuring songs from their latest album. Don’t miss Nelo and Stefi with their sensuous Afro-Colombian blowout featuring music we dare you not to dance to! As one fan put it, “Phenomenal rhythms… truly an evening to remember!” Come join us Saturday, August 26, at 8pm. Tickets are available at La Biblioteca and online at www.sheltervg4.com.

Friday, August 25, at 5pm, we present Amores Perros, the mesmerizing 2001 debut of the world-acclaimed Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu. On the brink of the new millennium in bustling Mexico City, one horrible car accident intertwines, inextricably, the lives of three perfect strangers. According to The New York Observer, Iñárritu “shows a deep understanding of people” and Amores Perros is “one of the most honored and expertly articulated Mexican films.”

On Wednesday, August 30, at 5pm, we show The Simulation Hypothesis. Are we “real” or are we living in a virtual reality? Is the universe emerging from an information processing system? Is it possible to “hack” the system and change reality? According to Professor Brian Whitworth at Massey University, “It’s by far the best documentary I have watched on this topic, fascinating, mind-bending stuff!”

Friday, September 1, at 5pm, we screen Vámonos con Pancho Villa, the story of the Mexican Revolution as masterfully told by famed Mexican director, Fernando de Fuentes. The story follows six brave peasants, “Los Leones de San Pablo,” who recount their impressions of the loved and reviled national hero, General Pancho Villa. The New York Times asserts, “This is the movie where style is at its best as everything just fits nicely with a vision of the Revolution. Vámonos con Pancho Villa was de Fuentes’ true masterpiece about the Mexican Revolution.”
