Writers’ Conference Reveals 2018 Keynote Speakers

The San Miguel Writers’ Conference and Literary Festival, now widely recognized as the best writers’ conference in North America, is also one of the most exciting weeks of each year in San Miguel. Hundreds of writers and readers gather in San Miguel from all parts of Mexico, the US, Canada, and Europe to hear some of the finest writers working today and to attend panels, workshops, social events, and extraordinary networking.

The Conference Executive Committee is thrilled to announce the keynote speakers for the February 2018 Conference, February 14 to 18, 2018.

Emma Donoghue is the internationally celebrated author of Room. She also wrote the screenplay for the movie, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best adapted screenplay. Both her fiction and her nonfiction works have won numerous awards. Room was shortlisted for Man Booker and Orange Prizes and has sold over two million copies.

Wally Lamb is the author of six New York Times best-selling novels: I’ll Take You There, We Are WaterWishin’ and Hopin’, The Hour I First Believed, I Know This Much is True, and She’s Come Undone, which was a 1992 Top Ten Book of the Year selection in People magazine. Two of his novels were selected for Oprah’s Book Club.

Rita Dove, a much beloved poet, is the former US Poet Laureate, the first African American to hold the title. Her poetry collection Thomas and Beulah won the Pulitzer Prize. She is an acclaimed lyricist and has written lyrics for composers ranging from Tania León to John Williams.

John Vaillant is the award-winning author of both fiction and nonfiction, including Jaguar’s Children, a novel about Mexicans trying to cross the border. He writes for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, National Geographic, and others. His books have all been bestsellers in Canada.

Joseph Boyden works with and writes about the First Nation people of Northern Ontario. His novels, including The Tiger and Through Black Spruce, have all won numerous awards.

• Jane Friedman has worked for 20 years in the publishing industry and is known for her expertise in digital media strategy for authors and publishers. She is co-founder of The Hot Sheet, a well-regarded publishing industry newsletter for authors, and maintains an award-winning blog for writers,, that is extremely popular with writers.
