Libros Sin Fronteras Will Host a Book Drive and Fundraiser

By Linda Curran and Aurora Lopéz Trujillo

Libros Sin Fronteras, a mobile library, provided books to six rural primary schools, three kinder schools, one local private school, and a community center in the outskirts of San Miguel the past school year. This literacy initiative impacted approximately 625 students with 1,300 books. We also provided literacy and English classes.

The Association plans to expand the mobile library to three additional schools in the 2017–18 school years, commencing in September, and to add another student literacy component.

Libros Sin Fronteras will host a book drive and fundraiser for the Library Initiative on Wednesday, August 23, 5:30–7:30pm at the English School, Aprendizaje del Inglés, where the books are now temporarily housed. Guests may enjoy margaritas, sangria, water, and appetizers as well as background guitar music provided by our local talented performers, Jack and Frances.

Each guest is asked to donate to the event a reading book appropriate for children between five and ten years of age in Spanish or bilingual (Spanish/English), with illustrations. All types of genres are welcome. Your donated book will provide libraries for the additional targeted three schools as well as replenish the books that were not returned from some of the schools last year.

Each guest is asked to donate 200 pesos. This money will be used to purchase gasoline to transport the books and to purchase additional books through Scholastic and at the December Guadalajara Book Fair. Please come to our event to learn more about who we are and to promote literacy.
