Cultivating Creativity and Joy

Louise Green

By Jon Sievert

The Rev. Louise Green explores the link between creativity and joy at this Sunday’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Service.

One of the best ways to raise your level of joy is a regular practice of creativity. As many artists come to know, the creative habit is one that can be cultivated over time. San Miguel seems to awaken an impulse to explore creativity of all kinds, and this, in turn, can boost a sense of wellbeing and ease. When we make time and space for open-ended expression, in whatever field, we develop the human gift of creativity. The joy that comes with that play sometimes comes most easily when you are just being yourself, exploring who you might become.

Joy makes you more creative. But when you are creating, where is your joy found? Is it in the result or is it in the creating? Too many people measure their joy in the outcome of their process instead of the process itself. If we place our joy only in the result of our work, we will find our joy is in someone else’s control. Take that joy back. Find joy in the process of making, not the result of it and you’ll find that the well never goes dry. Rev. Green’s talk tells the stories of two scientists, a visual artist and an architect who both found new creative fields by following what brought them joy.

As Minister of Congregational Life at River Road UU Congregation in Bethesda, Maryland since 2013, Rev. Green combines her background in yoga, spiritual direction, organizing, and ministry. She received a M.Div. from Harvard Divinity School in 1991, was ordained in the United Church of Christ in 1992, and has been a Unitarian Universalist minister since 2004. She lives in Washington, DC, with her spouse, Regina Tosca, and a houseful of animals.

The UU Fellowship meets every Sunday at 10:30am at Posada de Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15, and welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity. The room is wheelchair accessible. For more information, visit our website at
