Centennial Constitutional Celebrations Honor Dr Anastasio Lopez Escobedo

By Marcela Andre López

The centennial anniversary of the national and state constitutions, (1917–2017), include plans for great celebrations and commemorative events. San Miguel de Allende´s government representatives are honoring physician, Dr Anastasio López Escobedo, for his key leadership writing the constitutions 100 years ago.

Dr López Escobedo was first a Guanajuato State representative who was a key member of the legal team of men who wrote the current Mexican and Guanajuato constitutions in 1917. The city chronicler, Professor Luis Felipe Rodriguez Palacios, who is documenting new information from the López Escobedo family descendants now, was provided this first-release of López Escobedo´s wedding portrait. The photo is owned by this writer, Marcela Andre López, firstborn descendant of Dr Anastasio López Escobedo.

There was an exhibit in Guanajuato, Los Hombres que escribieron la Constitución de 1917 y su Tiempo, (The Men Who Wrote the Constitution of 1917 and Their Times.) This exhibit included Dr López Escobedo´s medical degree in the exhibit of the legislative sessions in Guanajuato City. Guanajuato was the first state in Mexico to have a state constitution and the earliest to give women voting rights ahead of the rest of the  nation.

The YouTube releases and media spots about this centennial celebration are entitled, “The Men Who Wrote the Constitution.” Ironically, the only portrait now in the city chronicler´s files of Dr Anastasio López Escobedo is with his wife, Sra. Isabel Aguirre de López Escobedo who, as the doctor´s widow, donated the López Escobedo homes and pharmacy for orphanages and housing for teachers in the center of San Miguel.
